A waist trainer is a corset-like garment many wear to help slim their midsections. Regularly cleaning your waist trainer is hygienic and prolongs the garment's lifespan. Continue reading for two easy methods on how to clean your waist trainer.

Like a corset, a waist trainer is a device used to create a slimmer waist and influence a woman's curves to create an hourglass figure. They have become trendy in recent years despite speculation in the air about whether or not waist trainers really work.

If you own a waist trainer, one of the many ways you want to keep it in mint condition is to wash it frequently and adequately. Read further to learn how to clean your waist trainer by machine or hand washing.

How to Clean Your Waist Trainer

1. Machine Washing Your Waist Trainer

While machine washing a waist trainer is possible and might be a helpful way to speed up the cleaning process, it is not advised as it may damage the garment and its shape. But if you are adamant about using a washing machine, here are simple steps to help keep your waist trainer in perfect condition:

What you'll need:

  • A lingerie or intimacy bag
  • Gentle to mild laundry detergent

Directions:

1. Place your waist trainer in a lingerie or intimacy bag. This will prevent the garment from hooking onto anything and snagging during washing.

2. Then, place the intimacy or lingerie bag in the washing machine — ensuring there is nothing else in there — which you then set to a gentle, cold-water cycle, adding a gentle to mild laundry detergent.

3. Remove your waist trainer from the washing machine as soon as possible once it is done washing, as leaving it may lead to the build-up of unpleasant odors.

4. The best way to dry your waist trainer is to air dry it by either laying it flat on a clean towel, using another clean towel to drain any excess liquid, or hanging it outside to dry.

5. Once your waist trainer is fully dry, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. You also want to keep your waist trainer somewhere with as little moisture as possible, which may lead to mold and mildew developing on the fabric. Store it flat or rolled, avoiding folding or bending.

2. Hand Washing Your Waist Trainer

Hand washing your waist trainer is highly recommended for cleaning the garment. While it is a more laborious process, it is safer for the shape and lifespan of the trainer. Find out more on how to clean your waist trainer by hand washing it below:

What You'll Need:

  • Laundry detergent
  • Something to scrub your waist trainer with

Directions:

1. Fill a basin with lukewarm water, as hot water will damage the material of the waist trainer and lead to discoloration.

2. Pour a gentle laundry detergent into the warm water, and place your waist trainer in the soapy water.

3. Then, gently scrub your waist trainer using a soft sponge or cloth.

4. Once your waist trainer is clean, drain the soapy water and fill it up again with fresh water, but this time, do not add detergent. Allow the waist trainer to soak in just water for about 5 minutes.

5. While avoiding bending or wringing the waist trainer, rinse off any soap residue and squeeze out any excess water from the garment.

6. Once damp, you can follow the same drying process as machine washing — place the garment flat on a clean towel or hang it outside. Keep the waist trainer flat or rolled for storage, avoiding folding or bending.

How often you wash your waist trainer depends on how often you use it. If your waist trainer is exposed to dirt and sweat daily, you must clean it more frequently than if you wore it once a week.

However, a good rule of thumb is to clean your waist trainer at least once a week. For more how-tos, here is a detailed guide on How to Wash 4C Hair.
